Birthday Invitation Wording & Entiquette
Here are some additional tips to apply to birthday party invitation wording. These are true of virtually any style of invitation or party theme, so it's a good idea to take heed of this widely appropriate advice.
1) DO check your spelling and grammar. Carelessness or a rash of typos may lead guests to think that you don't care about the event.
2) DO include contact information, including a phone number where you can be reached and, if possible, an e-mail address. Make it easy for guests to communicate with you.
3) DON'T include gift ideas or registry information. Interested guests will contact you for gift ideas. Providing gift information is widely regarded as the same thing as asking for a present. That's poor etiquette at best, and is likely to be viewed as rude or offensive.
4) DO be clear about a dress code, if any. If guests may get wet or dirty, or if the party will not be in a climate controlled environment, make guests aware of this. Specify black-tie or cocktail attire, if preferred.
5) DO ask for an RSVP by a date that allows for enough time for you to prepare. If you know you'll be shopping for the party on Wednesday, ask guests to respond by Tuesday. If you need a head count for caterers, the venue operator, or just to figure out parking on your street, you won't want to wait for the last minute.
6) DO include the zip code of the party location. Mapping and directional programs utilize zip codes when locating a destination and this addition will likely save you and a guest an otherwise unnecessary round of phone calls.
