I started by hitting the internet for ideas for my son’s 3rd birthday cake. He is crazy into Veggie tales and I wanted something 3 dimensional, I saw a few things I liked and combined some ideas.

First I made a chocolate cake for the countertop- simply using a 9x13 pan and then made yellow cake with a buttercream/strawberry filling to make the mini cake that Bob is on. I used homemade buttercream fondant (the flavor is much better- but it is a little harder to roll and move) for the tiles and to cover Larry and Bob and to make the peas. I used a square cookie cutter to make the tiles and set them into the frosted cake so it would be like grout. Both Larry and Bob are made from rice krispy treats that I molded while warm, let them cool then they were ready to be frosted before covering with fondant.

My 3 year old loved seeing his favorite characters and the bright colors were a hit. Both Characters were molded around some skewers so that they could easily be added to the cake. The balloons were fondant on skewers and ended up being a bit heavy and eventually leaned and fell over, but we all get to enjoy the cake anyway. I used a toothpick and black food coloring for some of the tiny details like the peas expressions.

It was so much fun to make and eat!
