Coolest Contruction Cake

Our son, Elijah is now three years old. He has loved trucks of any kind since he was able to recognize them. Three weeks before he was going to turn 3 years old, September 13th, I lost my job and was looking at trying to support my wife and 4 kids without a job.
I wanted to give my son, Eli, a special birthday cake but could not afford to spend the $26.00 or more for a cake from the store with trucks on them. I decided that if I could make him a cake with trucks on it, then that would be perfect. Now since I am not a baker of any sort, this was going to be one of the most challenging things I have ever done.
I started by baking the cake and making some icing from confectioner's suger. After the cake was done and I was wondering how I was ever going to pull it off, I just started decorating the cake and using my imagination about what my son loves. I added trucks, and a backhoe, and some crunched up oreo cookies for dirt. After it was all done I looked at it and all though it may not win any awards I thought it was perfect for my son.
My wife came home and saw the cake and she started to cry. She said that the cake was the best present I have ever given to any of my 4 children and she was so proud of me. Our son and other children loved the cake, we had candles for him to blow out and ice cream with it.
Now, more then a month after his birthday, he still takes the toy trucks from the cake with him wherever he goes. I learned a valuable lesson that it's not how much I spend on my children that makes them happy, but how much of "Me" I put into the gift for them.
